KERSCOTT, for those visitors seeking
to sample bed and breakfast on a real working Exmoor farm in
the best of British traditions.
Farmed continuously for over a thousand years
Kerscott is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) The present
house is 'L' shaped and dates from early 15th century with parts
from an earlier period, full of beams, sloping floors, a branch
staircase and many other original features. Once thatched the
house is now under slate and still retains it original walled
cottage garden and cobblestone paths.
The spacious sitting room is elegantly
furnished and has a magnificent large inglenook fireplace fitted
with a splendid log burning stove for those chillier evenings.
Whilst this wing was completed in 1630 our dining room is located
in the much older part of the house. This charming room is heavily
beamed with a pretty log burning inglenook fireplace still retaining
two bread ovens from different periods and fitted with many old
cooking implements. A special feature in this room is a Devon
cob cream oven fortunately surviving after several centuries.
Despite its antiquity the house, which is peaceful and kind,
is comfortable, cosy and warm and is equipped with a full Calor
gas central heating system.
I have provided bed and breakfast for almost thirty years and enjoy cooking on my trusty Aga. At breakfast you will find a choice of tea/roasted coffee, cereals, fruit juice, yoghurts and fruits followed by a traditional farmhouse cooked breakfast or a variation of the ingredients cooked to your preference. Also by prior arrangement a three course meal is available on most evenings; starter, main course and dessert. We use, according to the time of year, our own farm reared meat, namely succulent beef, lamb, mutton, pork and local chicken, rabbit, pheasant and venison accompanied by a selection of vegetables. Starters and desserts are also presented in keeping with the time of year. A tasteful vegetarian option is equally available. Enjoy unashamedly straightforward food from a timeless farming environment of rural England .
A further delight for you to anticipate
is that over the centuries Kerscott has always been served by
its own springs and wells and has never received piped water.
Tried, tested and pure there is no better stock for my
cooking or your thirst.
